Research... As published
in the British Journal of Dermatoloy, phototherapy with blue (415 nm) and red
(660 nm) light was studied in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris.
After 12 weeks of 15 minute daily active treatments with a portable light
source, a mean improvement of 76% in inflammatory lesions was observed.
Investigators and patients favored the blue-red light therapy, with more
patients achieving marked improvement or clearance than in any of the other
treatment groups.
The researchers concluded that blue light and red
light "act synergistically in improving acne by combining antibacterial and
anti-inflammatory action, rendering phototherapy with blue-red light an
effective and safe treatment for acne vulgaris."
Technically
Speaking... Research shows that propionibacterium acnes contain
porphyrins, which can be excited by blue (415 nm) light, leading to the killing
of the bacteria. Studies show that red (660 nm) light may have an
anti-inflammatory effect on inflamed skin pores. Based on European studies, the
HappySkin Acne Light uses two isolated light waves, a blue light that has been
found to trigger a natural process that kills the propionibacterium which
settles in the follicles in the skin and causes acne, and a red light that
appears to positively affect the inflammatory process.
What is Acne and What Causes
It...? Acne is a disease of the sebaceous hair follicle. The hair
follicles, or pores, in your skin contain sebaceous glands (also called oil
glands). These glands make sebum, which is an oil that lubricates your hair and
skin. Under normal conditions, sebum travels up the hair follicle and out to
the skin's surface. However, with acne, sebum is trapped within the follicle,
clogging the follicle. The bacterium that seems to cause acne is called
Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and is present in everybody's skin, usually
lodged in the hair follicle. The clogged follicle becomes a breeding ground for
bacteria. When the sebaceous gland gets clogged, and sebum builds up inside the
follicle, P. acnes multiplies rapidly and can result in acne.
