is prostate cancer?
The clinical term for prostate cancer is Adenocarcinoma of
the prostate, which means a cancerous tumor on the prostate
gland. As the prostate cancer tumor grows it can spread to
the entire body if not treated effectively and quickly.
Facts about Prostate Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer
is the most common type of cancer in men in the United States.
Prostate cancer occurs in 1 out of 6 men and ACS estimates
that about 230,900 new cases will be diagnosed in 2004 and
about 29,900 men will die from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer
currently is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths
in men, with lung cancer being the first.
African American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer,
and Asian and Native American men have the lowest incidence.
Men over the age of 70 have a higher rate of developing prostate
cancer, 60% of all new diagnosed cases occur within men over
the age of 70. Risk Factors
Family history of prostate cancer increases your risk of prostate
cancer. As do other environmental and dietary issues may contribute
to increase risk, here are a few possibilities:
55 years old and older
- Diet high in saturated fat
- Exposure to heavy metals (e.g., cadmium)
- Race (African American)
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Smoking
- Heavy alcohol consumption
Early Symptoms of prostate cancer
Prostate exams can often discover and detect prostate cancer.

- Blood in the urine or semen
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Inability to urinate
- Nagging pain or stiffness in the back, hips, upper thighs,
or pelvis
- Painful ejaculation
- Pain or burning during urination (dysuria)
- Weak or interrupted urinary flow
