What is prostate cancer?

The clinical term for prostate cancer is Adenocarcinoma of the prostate, which means a cancerous tumor on the prostate gland. As the prostate cancer tumor grows it can spread to the entire body if not treated effectively and quickly.

Facts about Prostate Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in the United States. Prostate cancer occurs in 1 out of 6 men and ACS estimates that about 230,900 new cases will be diagnosed in 2004 and about 29,900 men will die from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer currently is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in men, with lung cancer being the first.

African American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer, and Asian and Native American men have the lowest incidence. Men over the age of 70 have a higher rate of developing prostate cancer, 60% of all new diagnosed cases occur within men over the age of 70.
